Longan Fruit for Healthy Digestion
Longan fruit is a tropical fruit that grows in many places in South Asia and Southeast Asia. The name of longan is derived from “long yan” which means the dragon eye since when you peel the fruit, it will look like an eyeball. People from different countries will call the fruit differently. Indonesian call it kelengkeng. Longan is a tropical soapberry that bears fruit at the same time with lychee. The fruit is round with light brown shell and black spots all around. The shell is hard when it is ripe but with a little squeeze, you can easily peel it. After you peel it, you will see the translucent flesh that tastes sweet and juicy. The seed cannot be eaten, hard and round in black color.
Due to the sweet and juicy fruit, people commonly only eat the fresh longan fruit. However, in many places, people add the longan fruit in their soups, desserts, snacks, and other foods. Longan fruit is also used as a medicine. The main health benefit of longan fruit is that it is good for the digestive system due to its high fiber and various nutrients that can help promote healthy intestine and help food absorption process inside the intestine. Longan fruit contains many nutritions such as vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B3, vitamin C, sucrose, protein, iron, manganese, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and fat.
The other health benefits of longan fruit are to treat headache, eradicate helminth, and hernia. In Chinese medicine, people use dried longan as a medicine to promote relaxation. Besides the fruit, people use the root of the longan tree to promote blood circulation and to treat people with urinate problem. The leaves of the longan tree can be used as an anti-inflammatory and as medicine to treat fever. The seed can be used to reduce pain and stop the bleeding. The seed can also be used as shampoo due to the saponin inside the seed that can create foam.
